The transformation of agrifood systems toward sustainable production is essential for reducing the environmental impact of agriculture and meeting growing global food demands. This requires the adoption of innovative and sustainable practices, including the use of environmental inhibitors (EIs) – compounds applied in agriculture to reduce non-CO₂ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve nitrogen utilization in crop production.

FAO has released a report capturing the outcomes of the third FAO stakeholder roundtable meeting held in Toronto, Canada, on 10 October 2024. The report, Global dialogue on food technologies – Food safety aspects of cell-based food and precision fermentation, highlights that while innovative food production systems are gaining attention for their potential contributions to food security and sustainability, they also raise important food safety questions. Participants stressed that understanding production steps, input materials and product characteristics is essential for science-based safety assessment, especially in countries facing knowledge and capacity gaps.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), together with the World Health Organization (WHO), is pleased to announce a webinar launching the report, Prioritizing food safety issues related to chemical water quality in agrifood systems. The event will bring together food safety experts and stakeholders to discuss food safety aspects related to water use in agrifood systems with a focus on risk assessment for waterborne chemical hazards.

What if gourmet wagyu beef could be prepared not in a factory but on a kitchen counter? 
This question framed a focused FAO seminar held on 24 November 2025, bringing together participants from academia, private sector, non-governmental organizations and several FAO technical divisions. The session was designed as an informal, exploratory exchange rather than a policy discussion.

At the China International Food Safety & Quality (CIFSQ) Conference held in Beijing from 5 to 6 November 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) shared technical perspectives on how artificial intelligence (AI) can support stronger, more responsible and anticipatory food safety systems. The conference brought together regulators, research institutes and industry leaders for two days of discussion on scientific innovation and regulatory preparedness.

FAO participation in high-level and technical events held in Singapore from 2 to 4 November 2025 and in Seoul from 13 to 15 November 2025 highlighted a shared message from regulators and scientific institutions: as new food production systems such as cell-based food production and precision fermentation continue to evolve, international cooperation is essential to support effective and science-based food safety assurance processes.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) hosted the webinar “Beyond the horizon: food safety foresight for smarter preparedness and anticipation,” bringing together partners and stakeholders to discuss strategic approaches to food safety foresight from public and private sector perspectives.

Reliable access to sufficient and safe water is essential for food security; however, water systems globally are under unprecedented pressure. Agriculture accounts for over 70% of freshwater withdrawals, and growing challenges, such as climate change, population growth, and societal changes, are increasing water demand. This often leads to the use of alternative water sources that may be of lower or unknown quality. While progress has been made in identifying microbial risks in agrifood water sources, guidance on chemical hazards remains limited.

A group of experts representing various regions and disciplines, ranging from toxicologists to specialists in microbial ecology engaged in chemical risk assessments and microbiome research programs, convened to discuss key aspects in the field.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened workshops on ranking food safety risks in Mongolia (17 and 18 June), the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam (20 and 21 June), the United Republic of Tanzania (24 and 25 June), and the Republic of Uganda (27 and 28 June). The workshops are the first part of a series of capacity building activities for risk analysis in these four countries under the One Health for Food Safety (1H4FS) project, which is supported by the Republic of Korea.

Last week, the Government of Belize concluded a comprehensive assessment of the country’s national food control system with a high-level validation meeting in the city of Belmopan, where senior policymakers endorsed the findings of the final report and committed to implementing the Strategic Action Plan developed during the process.

The Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has concluded a national, followed  by a  regional, workshop in Dubai aimed at strengthening food safety governance and advancing coordinated action across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
