Key messages

FRA is the most comprehensive and authoritative global assessment of forest resources, providing transparent, accessible, evidence-based and country-driven data to support sustainable forest management, climate action and international processes.

Supporting messages
  • FRA is a country-driven process, covering 236 countries and areas based on official national data through a global network of national correspondents.

  • Each FRA cycle is independent; refer to the latest report for the most accurate and timely data.

  • The FRA platform provides the most up-to-date national data, where countries can voluntarily update between the five-year reporting cycles.

  • Harmonized standards, methods and definitions ensure consistent, comparable and high-quality data, supporting coherent international reporting on forests.

  • FRA complements country reports with remote sensing, enabling consistent regional and global assessments of forest resources.

Boilerplate

This standardized explanation can be used at the bottom of press releases and web stories for accurate and clear representation of FRA.

The Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) report is an essential resource for understanding long-term trends in forest resources and how they relate to global goals and targets, including those on biodiversity, climate and sustainable land use. With its transparent methodology and broad scope, FRA is the only worldwide assessment based on official national data. It is, therefore, the most authoritative global source of data for policymakers, foresters, researchers and anyone wanting to know the status and trends of the world’s forests.

The FRA data are collected using commonly agreed guidelines, terms and definitions through a transparent, traceable reporting process and a well-established network of officially nominated national correspondents. The information collected through the country reporting process is complemented with global and regional satellite-based analyses of the world’s forest resources for the Remote Sensing Survey (RSS).
