Forest monitoring and Indigenous-led restoration in Brazil

Brazil is home to the largest share of the Amazon rainforest — a vital ecosystem for the planet’s climate, biodiversity, and people. With a goal of zero illegal deforestation by 2030, Brazil is transforming how it monitors and restores forests through cutting-edge science, policy innovation, and international cooperation.

From satellite-based monitoring to community and Indigenous-led restoration, Brazil’s approach is inspiring a global movement for forest protection and restoration.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports Brazil’s leadership through the AIM4Forest programme and the AIM4NatuRe initiative, both helping strengthen forest and ecosystem monitoring, in partnership with the United Kingdom. These initiatives bring transparency, technology, and partnerships to track restoration and biodiversity recovery across the country — from the Amazon to the drylands of the Caatinga.

Meet the people behind the progress: from government experts and Indigenous leaders to farmers restoring degraded land — all showing that forest recovery is not just possible, but essential.
