Rural communities have always found ways to adapt. Through a changing climate, shifting markets and demographic transitions, generations of farmers have persisted through hard work. And today, smallholder farmers, honey producers and mountain shepherds from ten rural communities across Europe and Central Asia are gradually adopting new tools that support their resilience: digital technologies. From simple battery-powered devices to complex sensor networks, from social media pages to advisory platforms powered by artificial intelligence (AI), these tools are helping solve everyday challenges.

In Georgia, the livestock sector accounts for about 50% of the agricultural GDP. Traditional livestock farmers and smallholders dominate. The number of small ruminants is roughly estimated to be around 1 million. Mutton and live small ruminants are one of the main agricultural export potentials of Georgia, which is regularly among the main top ten agricultural exports.

On 18-19 March the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened consultation meetings with representatives from various Georgian government ministries and international development partners to discuss its Country Programming Framework (CPF) for 2026–2030.

With the aim to integrate aquaculture modules in the NAITS and FMS, strengthen national capacity for digital monitoring and management of aquaculture production and support data-driven policy and regulatory decision-making in the aquaculture sector, from 26 January to 6 February FAO in Georgia hosted FAO International Aquaculture Specialist, Dr. Ruth Garcia, who specializes in Aquaculture Science, with the hands-on experience in the fields of aquaculture production, aquatic animal health, aquatic biosecurity and aquatic genetic resources management.
