During the open ceremony of the ADRIBIOPRO 2024 -3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ADRIATIC BIODIVERSITY PROTECTION1, the AdriaMed Programme initiated the celebration of its 25th anniversary with a dedicated event titled: Adriatic fisheries and aquaculture: next 25 years (identifying gaps and opportunities for future development; the role of young generations) .
The celebration marked a quarter century of dedicated partnership between FAO, Italy, coastal countries and regional organizations of the Adriatic Sea to promote cooperation and involvement of all stakeholders for the management and sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture to achieve food and nutrition security leaving no one behind.
Dating back to 1999, the Programme is one of the longest-running fisheries development initiative of Italy and FAO. Over the years, the Programme has worked with all the Adriatic countries assisting them in fisheries research and management, aquaculture development, strengthening capacities and fostering scientific and institutional cooperation.
The results and the experience accrued, as well as the advantage of a long-lasting project in creating bridges and dialogue between countries sharing resources like Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro and Slovenia were pointed out among the greatest AdriaMed achievements. The lessons learnt will be used as examples to be replicated in other oceanic regions toward better nutrition, better production, better environment and better life for communities using marine and inland water services. To celebrate the anniversary, a book is being prepared summarizing the main impact the project had - stay tuned for more updates!
About the Programme
The AdriaMed Programme is operating since 1999, making it one of the longest-running fisheries development initiative of FAO and Italy. Executed in close collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests and involving the six countries facing the Adriatic Sea, the programme supports the development of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture to achieve food and nutrition security.
