The FAO-led programme “Supporting AFR100 by engaging with small-scale forest and farm producers” contributes to the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100). Through its activities in six countries — the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Togo and the United Republic of Tanzania — the programme supports local communities to accelerate progress toward the commitments made under AFR100, through which 34 African countries aim to restore at least 100 million hectares of degraded land and forests by 2030

Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development with a total budget of EUR 40 million, the programme provides financial and technical assistance to local communities, including smallholder forest and farm producer organizations and Indigenous Peoples, and strengthens their capacity to monitor and communicate restoration results and share lessons learned.
Goals of the programme
  • Stimulate forest and landscape restoration on 42 000 ha of degraded land in an area of influence of about 120 000 ha across six countries in Africa.
  • Scale up locally driven restoration action by providing direct financial and technical support to local communities, including Indigenous Peoples, forest and farm producer organizations and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
  • Create restoration-related new and improved value-added businesses and income opportunities, particularly at the local community level, with a strong focus on women and youth.
