Through a combination of technical assistance, knowledge generation, capacity development and stakeholder engagement, the Blue Ports Initiative supports fishing ports in becoming drivers of sustainable economic, social and environmental development.
Global blue ports network
The Blue Ports Initiative facilitates collaboration among fishing ports, governments, international organizations, research institutions, the private sector and coastal communities to advance sustainable port development through knowledge exchange, dialogue and partnership.
Capacity building
The Initiative supports the development of technical, institutional and operational capacities through training programmes, workshops, technical exchanges and learning opportunities that enable stakeholders to adopt and implement sustainable practices.
Technical support
The Blue Ports Initiative provides tailored technical assistance and advisory support to countries and fishing ports, helping them identify priorities, develop strategies and implement solutions that address local needs and opportunities.
Knowledge and management tools
The Initiative develops and disseminates technical guidance, methodologies, publications and digital resources to support evidence-based decision-making and the implementation of sustainable port management practices.
Monitoring and impact assessment
The BPI monitors and assesses environmental, social and economic outcomes to measure progress, demonstrate impact and support continuous improvement in the transformation of fishing ports.
Working groups
Dedicated thematic Working Groups provide platforms for collaboration, technical exchange and innovation across the environmental, social and economic dimensions of sustainability, supporting the implementation of the Blue Ports Initiative at local, national and global levels.
Environmental Preservation
Promotes renewal energy and just transition at fishing ports, as well as address waste management and MARPOL compliance related issues
Social Welfare
Contributes to a better understanding on topics related to community engagement, professional training, women empowerment, health, security and dissemination of cultural heritage
Market-oriented Innovation
Promotes entrepreneurship as strategic action to bring innovation to small-scale fishing sector, including circular economy, landing sites, labelling, or added value to seafood products.
