A Workshop to plan the 1999 R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveys in the northern CECAF area and the standardization of acoustic surveys in the region was held in Casablanca, Morocco from 18 to 22 October 1999. This Workshop was a follow-up to the Workshop "A review of the surveys off Northwest Africa in the 1990s" held in Bergen in 1998 (FAO, 1998).

This document provides a review of practically all the surveys carried out with the research vessel “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” from 1975 to the middle of 1993 in the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A workshop to evaluate the R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveys in Northwest Africa was held in Bergen, Norway, from 28 September to 2 October 1988. Participants were representing the countries of the region, Gambia, Mauritania, Morocco, Senegal as well as Norway, Russia and FAO. The purpose of the workshop was to review the information available on the resources in the region and define better survey design strategies for the future.
