Scan of climate and pandemic risks (optional activity)

The scan of climate and pandemic risks is conducted in CRFS assessment and planning projects that are following the multi-risk track, either as a stand-alone project or in conjunction with the main track.

It allows project teams to start identifying the risk components – that is, the most likely hazards, potential impacts on the CRFS, exposure, vulnerability, and resilience capacities.

Data and information are drawn from existing and secondary documentary sources, collected through document analysis and expert interviews. Information on policy and institutional frameworks may be gathered through an additional, focused round of stakeholder mapping including disaster risk management and urban resilience stakeholders.

The findings will enable project teams to identify some initial priority areas for in-depth research and action, as well as identify data gaps to be filled during the ‘In-depth assessment’ module.

The following tools will help with the scan of climate and pandemic risks:

Template: Table for collating stakeholder data

This table allows the project team to draw up a preliminary list of stakeholders and to start collating basic information drawn from reliable sources.

Template: Stakeholder interview guide and profile sheet

This document sets out some suggested questions for stakeholder interviews, and provides a template stakeholder profile sheet for collating responses. The profile sheet includes space for interviewee analysis of responses.

Template: Table to summarise risk componenets for each hazard

This template enables the project team to tabulate data from the Rapid scan of climate and pandemic risks on impacts of a hazard for ease of reference.

Template: Rapid scan report

This template will help the project team to develop a brief report with facts resulting from the rapid scan assessment for external dissemination (e.g. advocacy, donors, partners, etc.)

Example: Climate and pandemic risk assessment fact sheets – Antananarivo

A short, accessible fact sheet produced by CRFS project team in Antananarivo to communicate the main climate hazards, impacts on the CRFS, impacts of Covid-19, and priorities identified to increase CRFS resilience following the rapid scan.

Example: Climate and pandemic risk assessment fact sheets – Colombo

A short, accessible fact sheet produced by CRFS project team in Colombo to communicate the main climate hazards, impacts on the CRFS, impacts of Covid-19, and priorities identified to increase CRFS resilience following the rapid scan.

Example: Climate and pandemic risk assessment fact sheets – Kigali

A short, accessible fact sheet produced by CRFS project team in Kigali to communicate the main climate hazards, impacts on the CRFS, impacts of Covid-19, and priorities identified to increase CRFS resilience following the rapid scan.

Example: Climate and pandemic risk assessment fact sheets – Tamale

A short, accessible fact sheet produced by CRFS project team in Tamale to communicate the main climate hazards, impacts on the CRFS, impacts of Covid-19, and priorities identified to increase CRFS resilience following the rapid scan.

Training unit 6: Climate and pandemic risk rapid scan

This unit gives guidance on obtaining existing knowledge & data (secondary and qualitative) on relevant hazards; how they impact CRFS; exposure, vulnerability, and resilience capacities.
