Biofuels production at low ILUC risk for European sustainable bioeconomy (BIKE)
Indirect Land Use Change (ILUC) refers to the environmental impact of repurposing a land for bioenergy production.
Biofuels production at low ILUC risk for European sustainable bioeconomy (BIKE), an Horizon 2020 project, focused on gathering and disseminating information on the market potential of low-ILUC risk value chains for biomass, biofuels and bioliquids in Europe.
Objectives
Low-ILUC biofuels are a renewable energy source produced using methods and feedstocks that have reduced impacts on land use change.
The overall objective was to support the market uptake of safe and reliable biomass value chains, based on improved farming practices, as well as on the cultivation of crops on abandoned and degraded land, which can deliver food, feed, fuels and other raw materials with low risk of generating indirect land use changes (ILUC).
Activities
The core activity of BIKE was to investigate and to demonstrate the reliability of a series of low-ILUC risk biofuels production routes, assessing their environmental, social and economic sustainability. The project also aimed to develop the first ever certification module for low ILUC risk biofuels and to inform future policy and decision making.
