Between 2015 and 2016, Colombia made significant progress in reducing deforestation and forest degradation, which helped lower emissions in the Amazon Biome. In recognition of these efforts, the country received a $28.2 million investment from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) as part of the “REDD+ Colombia 2015-2016 Results-Based Payment” project, known in the country as GCF-Visión Amazonía.
The project is implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MinAmbiente), the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, and Environmental Studies (IDEAM), rural communities, and Indigenous Peoples. It also coordinates with Corpoamazonía, Cormacarena, Corazón de la Amazonía, and the SINCHI Institute in the region.
Its objective is to reduce deforestation and forest degradation in the Amazon Biome by strengthening capacities for monitoring vegetation cover, promoting the transition from Active Deforestation Nuclei (NAD) to Forestry and Biodiversity Development Nuclei (SFMN), and by strengthening the capacities of Indigenous Peoples for sustainable forest management and conservation, as well as their territorial governance.
