Global Agriculture and Food Security Program

The FAO Investment Centre coordinates and guides FAO’s growing partnership with GAFSP, which began at GAFSP’s inception in 2010. FAO plays a dual role as implementer and supervisor. While countries are responsible for project implementation, the Centre acts as a focal point for FAO. It ensures effective coordination among the various stakeholders while providing strategic guidance and quality control of project documents, proposals and reports submitted to GAFSP.
The Centre has supported projects in Bangladesh and Senegal – part of GAFSP’s Missing Middle Initiative, a successful pilot that began in 2021. Building on this experience, the GAFSP introduced a new funding track that offers small grants to producer organizations to access technology, finance and markets.
By the end of 2023, the FAO/GAFSP portfolio reached a total of 22 projects, mostly in Africa and Asia, and one project in Latin America (amounting to over USD 60 million). This includes projects under preparation and implementation as well as closed projects.
