The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was established on 16 October 1945. This day is commemorated each year as World Food Day. In 2025, FAO celebrates its 80th anniversary, marking eight decades of action towards a world free from hunger.
To mark this occasion, FAO, in partnership with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry, organizes a range of activities for children and youth. Among these is an essay writing competition for students in grades 10–12, aimed at encouraging young voices to reflect on issues of food security and sustainable agriculture.
Now in its eighth year, the competition provides a platform for children and youth to contribute their ideas and perspectives, promoting collective solutions for safe, nutritious food and a secure future.

Celebrating World Creativity and Innovation Day at FAO Mongolia
21/04/2025
As the world faces the accelerating impacts of climate change, innovation in land use and agriculture is more vital than ever. The Paris Agreement, a legally binding international treaty under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), requires countries to submit their climate action plans—Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)—which outline strategies for both mitigation and adaptation.
For Mongolia, a country particularly vulnerable to climate change due to its geographic exposure and fragile ecosystems, the stakes are high. Between 1940 and 2013, the national average air temperature rose by 2.07°C, and future projections show more frequent and prolonged extreme weather events such as drought and dzud (severe winters). These climatic shifts threaten rural livelihoods, degrade pastures, and accelerate desertification, especially in the face of increasing private livestock numbers on public grazing lands.
Amid these challenges lies opportunity. The agriculture sector, with its unique intersection of environmental, social, and economic dimensions, holds immense potential for climate innovation. That’s why the SCALA Programme—Scaling up Climate Ambition on Land Use and Agriculture through NDCs and NAPs—is supporting Mongolia in building resilience and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI), SCALA brings together a creative, collaborative, and solution-oriented approach.
