Publicly-oriented agricultural research and development (R&D) systems have been growing at an average annual rate of 1.8 percent in the past two decades, reaching $50.4 billion in 2023, while the number of agricultural researchers has grown even faster, new data presented today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Acute food insecurity and malnutrition levels remain alarmingly high and deeply entrenched, with crises increasingly concentrated in a core group of countries, according to the Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) 2026, released today by an international alliance.  In its tenth edition, the GRFC shows that acute hunger has doubled over the past decade, with two famines declared last year for the first time in the report’s history.

As more countries and organizations step up efforts to tackle the issue, better information is helping to show where losses occur and where action can have the greatest impact. 2026 update

On the occasion of the International Day of Zero Waste, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Food Programme (WFP), together with the Republic of Türkiye, marked the tenth anniversary of the Technical Platform on the Measurement and Reduction of Food Loss and Waste (TPFLW).

Agriculture remains the backbone of Rwanda’s Economy and the foundation of rural livelihoods. As the country is on the trajectory towards the vision 2050 ambition of becoming a high-income and climate-resilient nation, the sector continues to play a central role in food and nutrition security, employment, and broad-based social-economic development.
