The FLR Asia Investment Forum will bring together government representatives, investors, and resource partners to enhance and strengthen partnerships in forest and landscape restoration (FLR) in Asia. The forum will assess the current investment landscape and priorities and seek to scale-up efforts through coordinated investments in FLR, including through South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC), the private sector, project aggregation, blended financing, and other emerging opportunities.

The forum will also see the launch of the KIDS4FLR initiative which is aimed at harnessing youth engagement in forest and landscape restoration.

The FLR Asia Investment Forum is co-organized by FAO, International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and UN Environment Programme (UNEP) with contributing partners including UN agencies, donors, and international financial institutions.

Forest and landscape restoration gaining momentum in Asia

Global restoration commitments cover around one billion hectares. Implementing these requires investments of up to USD 1 670 billion (for 10 years). Forest and landscape restoration is gaining momentum in the context of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, co-led by UNEP and FAO, to contribute to global targets. Restoration of the world’s degraded landscapes is critical for ensuring a healthy natural resource base for more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems.

At the regional level, the member nations of the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission endorsed a Regional Strategy and Action Plan for FLR (RSAP). FAO is assisting Bangladesh, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste to scale up FLR through a Regional Technical Cooperation Programme project. A Regional Programmatic Framework has been formulated, and a Regional FLR Network of implementing partners is being shaped to help countries meet their restoration commitments and visions.
