The European Parliament Committee on Agriculture invited FAO Chief Economist Máximo Torero to speak on the impacts of the war in Ukraine on global food markets. Torero stated that the war in Ukraine was exacerbating the already alarming figures described in the recently launched 2022 edition of the Global Report on Food Crises.

The overall objective of the Centre of Excellence for Social Protection (CEPS), an initiative of the Government of Senegal, in particular the Ministry of Community Development, Social  Equity, is to provide a platform for the exchange and sharing of innovative development solutions, knowledge, experiences, and good practices, and at the same time for learning in the field of social protection and poverty reduction, mainly between African countries in the broader framework of the South-South cooperation.

Santiago de Chile – La FAO y la Cooperación Española publicaron una nota de orientación jurídica sobre cómo legislar para promover la Agricultura Familiar.  El objetivo del documento público es motivar la acción parlamentaria en la materia y  poner a disposición un instrumento de referencia, como material de apoyo, para la generación de leyes nacionales y regionales.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in partnership with the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) and the University of Zambia (UNZA) will host a “Public Policy Cycles for Family Farming Training Program for State and Non-State Actors in Zambia” in Siavonga, Zambia from 25 – 29 April, 2022. The training will complement other capacity building efforts by various actors in the country for agricultural policy formulation for government officials, private sector, academia, among others.

Legal frameworks are essential to anchor policy efforts for family farming into inclusive and sustainable agri-food systems.
The United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028 (UNDFF) underscores the importance of family farming for achieving food security and adequate nutrition through inclusive and sustainable agri-food systems. Family farming brings benefits to rural people and territories, favouring economic and physical access to adequate food for all as well as safeguarding biodiversity and the environment. Moreover, it is paramount to coherently strengthen legislative and institutional frameworks across all the relevant policy areas of family farming to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The institutions have a long history of sharing knowledge and harnessing science and innovation for agrifood systems transformation
Wageningen, Netherlands/Rome - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) today formally launched a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Wageningen University and Research (WUR) in the Netherlands, aimed at developing and sharing knowledge and harnessing science, technologies and innovation for transforming agrifood systems. Collaborating since the 1970s, the two institutions have strengthened the partnership through development of a new MoU, concluded in December 2021.

Two virtual capacity-building training courses on hybrid rice and hybrid foxtail millet were successfully organized by the South-South and Triangular Cooperation Division (PST) from 7-28 March 2022, in collaboration with two Chinese specialized institutions. The trainings brought together about 40 participants from six African countries namely the Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Uganda, Namibia and Nigeria.  The first capacity-building training course on hybrid rice was organized in collaboration with the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center (HHRRC) of China from 7 to 16 March 2022.
