Boîte à outils pour l’homologation des pesticides

Restrict use to low- or no-emission applications

Description of the measure

Restricting the use of a pesticide to low- or no-emission applications, such as glasshouses, warehouses or containers can reduce – or avoid – adverse effects on non-target organisms such as bees, birds and aquatic organisms.

This measure may be taken for pesticides that pose high, unacceptable, risks to non-target organisms when applied in the field, but no-emission uses are part of the registration application.

Conditions for effective implementation

The pesticide should be appropriate and effective for applications in glasshouses, warehouses, containers, etc.

Estimated risk reduction potential

If no emission of the pesticide occurs, a 100% reduction in risk can be achieved.

However, in many cases, some emission may still take place, and risk reduction will not reach 100%. For instance, pesticides applied in a glasshouse may not drift outside the glasshouse, but might still contaminate surface water through emissions of polluted irrigation water.

Potential constraints

If pollinators (e.g. bumblebees) are released for pollination in glasshouses, the application of pesticides which are hazardous to bees is likely to be problematic.
