Steps towards PPR (Peste des petits ruminants) Global Eradication – Update

Iran Room (FAO Headquarters)
07.07.2016
 Rome time

Global small ruminant population is currently around 2.1 billion head. Small ruminants are the primary livestock of many low-income food-deficit households. In most cultures, women are primarily responsible of small ruminants' care and income stream. Small ruminant populations continue to suffer numerous threats, including high prevalence of high impact animal diseases, in particular peste des petits ruminants (PPR).

In the past two decades, PPR has spread rapidly, mostly in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Annual global impacts of PPR have been estimated at between US$ 1.4 billion to US$ 2.1 billion. PPR affects livelihoods, food and nutrition security, women, and youth employment.

PPR global programme is a partnership between FAO, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and several other institutions as well as civil society organizations. It was endorsed by the governing bodies of FAO and OIE with the vision for global eradication (like Rinderpest) by 2030. The programme is coordinated by a joint FAO/OIE PPR Global Secretariat based at FAO headquarters.
