Foodborne diseases have great impacts on the health of the population. It is estimated that, worldwide, 600 million people (1 in 10 people) fall ill from consuming contaminated food, and that 420.000 people die each year from this same cause. These diseases are generally caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemicals present in contaminated food or water.

Within the context of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), undertook a process of reflection on the future of agriculture, food systems and rural areas of Latin America and the Caribbean. It was a dialogue that involved a hundred experts from a score of nationalities, from academia, research centers, international organizations, other UN agencies, and the FAO itself.

The document summarizes the report that, based on a review of more than 250 studies, demonstrates the importance and urgency of climate action to protect the forests of the indigenous and tribal territories of Latin America as well as the indigenous and tribal peoples who protect them.
