FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean

Latin America and the Caribbean, with nearly 2 billion hectares, is home to 46% of the world’s tropical forests and nearly 60% of the planet’s terrestrial life. Although it accounts for only 8% of the world’s population, it has 23% of the world’s arable land and one-third of the freshwater available for human consumption. Over the past 50 years, the area under agricultural use has increased from 561 to 741 million hectares. However, the region faces significant challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, inequality, hunger, and poverty, which require a comprehensive approach to sustainable agricultural production.

In this context, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is promoting the adoption of good practices, innovation, and the responsible management of natural resources to transform agri-food systems toward sustainability, in line with its Strategic Framework.

This site highlights three strategic areas of work: sustainable soil management, agroforestry, and sustainable livestock production. It also incorporates a cross-cutting theme of practices and innovation for sustainable agriculture, which integrates solutions, technologies,

Within the framework of the Priority Programme Area “Innovation for Sustainable Agricultural Production,” FAO supports countries in adopting practices, technologies, policies and innovations that contribute to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable production systems.
