Blue-Cloud Final Conference - Unlocking Open Science in support of the EU Green Deal

08/12/2022

FAO representatives from the Fisheries & Aquaculture Division participated at the final conference of the Blue-Cloud.

The Blue-Cloud is part of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) that was launched by the European Commission in 2016 to provide a virtual environment with open and seamless services for storage, management, analysis and re-use of research data, across borders and disciplines.

It is also known as the Future of Seas and Oceans Flagship Initiative of the EU Horizon 2020 programme and provides a valuable service in this regard, by granting access to a robust European data infrastructure and computing resources to Developing and Developed Countries alike.

During the conference, FAO representatives emphasized the importance of access to marine data for all and stressed the importance of transforming aquatic food systems so that they can be managed in a sustainable way. They underscored that to achieve this, reliable data and the best scientific evidence was needed.

FAO’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Knowledge and Information team contributed to the project to develop the Global Atlas of Tuna Fisheries.

Another product that can be accessed online is the Global Record of Stocks and Fisheries, where FAO partnered with Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) in Greece and the National Research Council of Italy - Institute of Information Science and Technologies "Alessandro Faedo" (CNR-ISTI) , to develop a register of some 2500 fish stocks, providing information on their locations, management and status.
