FAO Chief Economist Máximo Torero embarked on a brief mission to Brussels for an exchange of views with the Council of the EU via its Working Party on International Food and Agricultural Questions (AGRIFAO).

The Chief Economist provided an overview of the current situation of global agrifood systems, the situation of food security, and the world’s agricultural markets.

EU delegates were particularly interested in Mr. Torero’s views on the issue of hidden costs of food. This was the central topic of the FAO flagship State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) report launched globally the following week.

It was the third time that the FAO Chief Economist engaged with a Working Party of the EU Council in Brussels this year. During the Swedish Presidency, he participated in two sessions of the Working Party on Development Cooperation and International Partnerships (CODEV-PI), held in February and June respectively.
