FAO Director of Partnerships and UN Collaboration discusses Global Parliamentary Summit preparations in Brussels

30/03/2023

In preparation for the upcoming Second Global Parliamentary Summit against Hunger and Malnutrition, FAO Director for partnerships and UN collaboration Marcela Villarreal held a series of meetings with Members of the European Parliament and of the European Parliamentary Alliance against Hunger and Malnutrition, during a two-day mission in Brussels.

The Summit will be the second meeting of its kind, seeking to advance political will to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 for Zero Hunger at international level. It is scheduled to take place on 15-16 June in Valparaiso, Chile, with many key players such as the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) and various parliamentarians from Africa, Asia and Europe supporting the initiative and showing interest in participating.

The Summit aims to take stock of the outcome of the first Summit held in Madrid in 2018 and gather the numerous achievements of collaboration between FAO and Parliamentary Alliances across the world in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. In particular, the objective is to share experiences, legislation and good practices which are fundamental in addressing food insecurity.

Reinforcing the partnerships collaboration in the framework of the visit, FAO Brussels organized a roundtable discussion with representatives from the European Union institutions and bodies and various civil society organizations. The roundtable provided an overview of the United Nations Decade on Family Farming and actions on its global agenda.  It also gave the opportunity to interact with organizations on how to support family farmers within the EU and beyond and allowed the exchange of information and best practices regarding public food procurement from family and small-scale farmers.

The Global Parliamentary Summit against Hunger and Malnutrition is a joint initiative of the Spanish Parliament, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Latin America and the Caribbean Parliamentary Front against Hunger.
