On World Food Day, a discussion on the global fight against hunger at the Belgian Federal Parliament

16/10/2023
On World Food Day, the Coalition Against Hunger, a group of 20 Belgian NGOs,  hosted at the Belgian Federal Parliament a seminar under the theme “End Hunger: Mission Impossible? Why is the fight against hunger failing and what are the solutions?”. The seminar aimed at strengthening the understanding of the status and root causes of food insecurity in the world.

With an overview of the global food security status, FAO Brussels Director Raschad
Al-Khafaji alerted in his opening remarks: “Hunger at a global level remained unchanged from 2021 to 2022 but is still far above pre-COVID-19 levels” He added that 122 million more people were facing hunger in 2022 than in 2019.

Al-Khafaji also shared key takeaways from some of FAO’s recently published reports including the 2023 edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI), the report on the Status of Women in Agrifood Systems, and the report on the Impact of Disasters on Agriculture and Food Security

Joke Bosteels, Advisor to the Belgian Minister of Development Cooperation, underscored the importance Belgium gives to all joint efforts towards global food security and shared how Belgium evaluates its cooperation policies at the halfway point of the SDGs.

Amaury Ghijselings, Head of Advocacy, Research & Programs at the Centre national de coopération au développement (CNCD), stressed the importance of taking further action to combat food insecurity. “The projected number of undernourished indicate that the world is far off track to achieve zero hunger by 2030,” he warned.

Other participants and speakers included Belgian and international NGOs like Broederlijk Delen, Oxfam Belgium, Caritas International Belgium, Boerenforum, IPES FOOD, CSIPM, FIAN International and others
