Science - policy interface: Inland fisheries and aquaculture advice for FAO members in Europe

20/03/2023

FAO’s European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission (EIFAAC) held an international symposium on “Inland Fisheries and aquaculture: advances in technology, stock assessment and citizen science in an era of climate change” in Ireland in June 2022. The proceedings of the symposium, organized by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) are now available online (here).

The symposium was organized in conjunction with EIFAAC 31, and held in Killarney, Ireland on 20–21 June 2022. It was attended by 105 participants from 14 countries. The main documentation comprised six invited papers and 35 experience papers and 15 posters. The symposium discussed the latest research on inland fish stock assessment, and how to deal with the challenges of climate change and its impacts on inland aquatic resources and fisheries. Citizen science initiatives and recirculation aquaculture systems innovations were also presented.  The symposium provided valuable networking opportunities for the participating scientists, and its conclusions and recommendations have been endorsed by EIFAAC 31.
