Slovenia becomes 38th member of the European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission

11/03/2024

Slovenia has become the latest country to join the European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission.

Mateja Čalušić, Slovenia’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, submitted a letter to QU Dongyu, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), on 18 January 2024, expressing Slovenia’s wish to join EIFAAC.

“Fishing is a traditional activity in the Republic of Slovenia with strong links to other sectors. Through the implementation of different measures, we strive to protect natural fish stocks, ensure and promote sustainable and competitive fisheries, and foster aquaculture. To increase the competitiveness of the processing industry, we focus on niche markets and innovative technologies, promote and raise awareness of fishery products,” Čalušić said.

“The Republic of Slovenia has well-developed aquaculture, as well as recreational and sport fishing. Accordingly, we believe that Slovenian membership in the EIFAAC will contribute, through cooperation and exchange of experience and knowledge, to further development of these areas,” Čalušić added.

She also underlined the commitment of her country’s fisheries policy to the preservation and development of the fisheries sector and to ensuring the adequate working conditions and safety of fishers and fish farmers.

With the formal registration by the FAO Director General, Slovenia has become EIFAAC’s 38th Member.

Through its membership in EIFAAC, Slovenia reaffirms its commitment to sustainable practices and the long-term well-being of its fisheries sector, aligning closely with the Organization's mission and values.

EIFAAC promotes the sustainable development, use, conservation, restoration and responsible management of inland fisheries and aquaculture in Europe, in line with FAO’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and other relevant international instruments.

The EIFAAC Management Committee, Technical and Scientific Committee, Members and the Secretariat all welcome Slovenia as a new EIFAAC Member and look forward to developing a strong relationship with all stakeholders involved in inland fisheries and aquaculture subjects.
