Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring

Tools and Learning Mosaic

Tools and learning for Target 2

A complementary set of guidance, data tools and learning resources supports countries throughout the restoration cycle - from national planning and implementation to monitoring, data review and reporting.

The resources on this page are designed to be used together or individually, depending on national needs, existing systems and the stage of implementation. They support consistency and shared understanding while allowing countries to adapt approaches to their ecological, institutional and social contexts.

Framework for Ecosystem Restoration Monitoring (FERM)

FERM is a global platform for monitoring ecosystem restoration and supporting countries in reporting progress towards Target 2. It includes a registry of restoration initiatives, geospatial mapping tools, access to data and good practices, and functions for connecting information from different systems. FERM complements national monitoring systems and provides the only channel for submitting geospatial information for headline indicator 2.1.

Resource Guide to Target 2

Developed by FAO, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Society for Ecological Restoration, the Resource Guide provides practical recommendations for implementing Target 2. It covers assessing degradation, identifying restoration priorities, selecting appropriate approaches, and planning monitoring and reporting. The guide also promotes inclusive, rights-based approaches and can be adapted to national circumstances.

Target 2 Road Map resources

The Target 2 Road Map coordinates technical work to strengthen ecosystem restoration monitoring and reporting. It brings together experts and partners to develop indicator guidance, ecosystem-specific monitoring approaches, data recommendations and capacity-development materials. The Road Map page provides access to approved resources, information on working groups, workshop materials and updates on ongoing activities.

Capacity development and regional learning

Capacity development is delivered through global, regional, subregional and national activities. Support may include webinars, hands-on training, peer exchange, ecosystem-specific technical sessions, data review exercises and assistance to strengthen national monitoring systems.

Regional and subregional technical and scientific cooperation support centres work with countries and global partners to tailor support to regional ecosystems, institutions, languages and reporting needs. Recent Target 2 dialogues in Asia, Latin America and Africa have combined technical guidance with practical work on national data, FERM and reporting.

Inclusive and rights-based restoration

Effective restoration depends on the participation of the people and institutions that govern, manage, use and care for ecosystems. Guidance and learning resources should support the full and effective participation of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, respect rights over lands, territories and resources, and recognize traditional knowledge and community-based monitoring.

Where restoration initiatives affect Indigenous and traditional territories, processes should follow applicable national and international standards, including free, prior and informed consent where relevant. Monitoring approaches should be developed collaboratively and should protect sensitive knowledge and data.
