Transforming food systems for forests: decoupling agricultural supply chains from deforestation
FAO supports governments and smallholders to achieve synergistic agriculture production and forest protection, by advocating for agricultural supply chains that are sustainable and do not compete with forests.
Our support in this work area supports countries to identify and develop multi-sectoral approaches to decouple production from deforestation through shared policies and agenda setting, improve sustainable practices and land management on the ground, and enhance due diligence of commodities for market-based regulation e.g. the European Union Deforestation Regulation.
FAO’s work in this area is guided by the COFO-COAG decision on linkages between agriculture and forestry and responds to member countries’ requests to develop shared pathways for agriculture and forestry sectors to jointly halt deforestation, through coordinated policies aligned with national sustainable development objectives.
