Halting deforestation, degradation and emissions

UN-REDD Programme

Launched in 2008 by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD Programme) builds on the technical expertise of FAO, UNDP and UNEP. The Programme supports nationally led REDD+ processes and promotes the informed and meaningful involvement of all stakeholders, including indigenous peoples and other forest-dependent communities, in national and international REDD+ implementation. Under the UN-REDD Programme, country-readiness efforts have begun to show significant results that should lead to results-based actions for results-based payments. The UN-REDD Programme also offers various delivery mechanisms that provide flexibility to match a country’s needs with the required support, and complement the contributions of other initiatives.

FAO provides comprehensive technical assistance in forestry and land-use, focusing on:

  • Monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV): Building capacities in MRV of greenhouse gas emissions and developing robust National Forest Monitoring Systems (NFMS) for REDD+, catering to broader sustainable development monitoring needs.
  • REDD+ strategy implementation: Supporting the implementation of REDD+ mitigation measures outlined in national strategies or action plans, integral to the UN-REDD Programme Strategic Framework 2021–2025.
  • Enabling environment for REDD+: Assisting countries in overcoming challenges in creating a conducive environment for REDD+. This includes legal preparedness, capacity development, and identifying best practices in sustainable forest management, governance, and land tenure regimes, in line with the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries, and Forests.
  • Institutional capacity development: Aiding in the development of multipurpose forest inventories, crucial for REDD+ readiness and forest carbon stock assessments.
  • Governance and legal support: Offering guidance in governance assessments, legal frameworks, land tenure issues, and promoting sustainable forest management.
  • Land-use investment planning: Facilitating the creation of sustainable forestry-focused land-use investment plans.
  • South-South collaboration: Promoting knowledge exchange and best practices through South-South networks, supported by resources and tools for effective forest and greenhouse gas monitoring.

Through these diverse initiatives, FAO aims to enhance global forest management and conservation, aligning with sustainable development and climate change mitigation objectives.
