The project improved rural livelihoods in 12 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, ensured connectivity and technological equipment, and strengthened youth leadership and empowerment in rural associations.

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representation in Barbados implemented a digital initiative to improve risk management and agricultural production, using information gathered through drone imagery and soil scanners.

Juan Pablo Albornoz, Strategic Production and Environment Linkage Specialist for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Uruguay, recently spoke with Radio Rural about the results of the digital initiative implemented under the project “South-South Cooperation: Digital Transformation and Innovation in Agriculture.”

The pilot project of the South-South Cooperation between Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the People's Republic of China and the Community of Latin American and the Caribbean States (CELAC) strengthened digital skills in 10 rural communities in the northern part of Uruguay.

At an event attended by representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Costa Rica (MAG), the Municipality of Guatuso, and small-scale producers, the main achievements and sustainability opportunities of an innovative digital initiative were presented.

Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries of Suriname, Prahlad Sewdien, met with an FAO delegation to discuss progress of the pilot initiative promoted by the "South-South Cooperation project: Digital Transformation and Innovation in Agriculture". In addition, he expressed his commitment to rural digital transformation and his support for a second phase of the project.

Representatives from five countries and representatives of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) carried out an exchange mission to China to learn about successful examples of innovative solutions applied by the Asian country in its rural digital transformation process.

Government officials from Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago explore digital solutions implemented by the Asian country that could be adapted and institutionalized in their journey towards rural digital transformation.

Qu Dongyu, Director-General of FAO, made a field visit to the Burma Rice Station to learn about the details of the implementation of a digital initiative promoted in the framework of the FAO-China-CELAC South-South Cooperation Project: digital transformation and innovation in agriculture.

The event, organized in the framework of the South-South cooperation Project: Digital Transformation and Innovation in Agriculture, brought together experts from 12 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to share experiences on digitalization in rural areas and rural agriculture. 

The FAO Representation in Uruguay presented the “Basalto Superficial Digital Territorial Ecosystem”, an initiative managed in the framework of the South-South Cooperation project: Digital Transformation and innovation in agriculture. 

The Initiative, promoted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the People’s Republic of China, seeks to improve decision-making for agricultural production, providing information on diagnosis, control and nutrition of crops in the canton of Guatuso.

The trip, carried out within the framework of the South-South Cooperation project: Digital transformation and innovation in agriculture, contributed to the work being carried out with the Guyana Rice Development Board to promote the use of digital tools to improve the crops of small rice producers.

Within the framework of the seminar “Digital connectivity in rural tourism”, the territorial digitalization project was presented that will provide access to connectivity, allow the development of digital skills and provide equipment to localities in the Itata Valley.

A delegation of the South-South Cooperation project between FAO, China and the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) spoke with the ambassador, Wei Qiang, and with the economic and commercial advisor, Zhou Quan, to discuss the digital pilot that will be implemented in the Ngäbe Buglé region, a Panamanian indigenous area.

The activity will be held this August 17th, and is part of the efforts of the Triangular South-South Cooperation between FAO, the People's Republic of China, and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), which aims to promote the digitalization of rural areas in the region. 

FAO Costa Rica representative and Chinese Ambassador meet to promote technologies in rural areas, within the framework of the FAO-China-CELAC South-South cooperation project. 

In this webinar held by FAO, 552 people participated online through Zoom, YouTube and Twitter webcast platforms, including decision-makers, members of agricultural organizations, academia and civil society from all over the region.

The experts of the FAO-China-CELAC cooperation project were received by the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Chile, Niu Qingbao.
