General situation during May 2026
Moroccan locust (DMA) hopper development was almost completed in Central Asia (CA); mass fledging and mating started, as well as egg-laying in the southern areas. DMA hatching was observed, followed by hopper development, in Azerbaijan, Georgia and the Russian Federation. DMA situation in May was classified as a threat by all CA countries and as calm in Caucasus and the Russian Federation. Italian locust (CIT) hatching continued in Kazakhstan and started in other affected Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries, followed by hopper development. The situation was classified as a threat in the Central Asian countries where it is present, and a calm in Caucasus and in the Russian Federation. Migratory locust (LMI) hatching started in Kazakhstan and in the Russian Federation.

General situation during April 2024 Forecast for May 2024 Moroccan Locust (DMA) hatching and hopper development was in progress in all Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries. Italian Locust (CIT) hatching had been recorded only in southern Kazakhstan at the end of April. Migratory Locust (LMI) hatching was recorded only in Krasnodar region of the Russian Federation. In the forecast period, DMA hopper development will continue in the Caucasus and the Russian Federation.

General situation during March 2024 Forecast for April 2024 Mass hatching of the Moroccan Locust (DMA) started in the three southern Central Asia (CA) countries in March mainly, during the second decade in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and the third decade in Afghanistan. No hatching was reported elsewhere. During the forecast period, DMA hopper development will continue in the above mentioned countries.

General situation from November 2023 till end of January 2024 Forecast until mid-March 2024 Natural cycles of the three main locust species in the Caucasus and Central Asian (CCA) region – Moroccan Locust (DMA), Italian Locust (CIT) and Asian Migratory Locust (LMI) – ended in late summer/early autumn. The locust eggs laid in the soil will remain in embryonic diapause until hatching in the spring.
