Moroccan Locust (DMA) lifecycle completed in the southern parts of Central Asia (CA); fledging, mating and egg-laying continued in other parts, as well as in the Caucasus and the Russian Federation. Italian Locust (CIT) fledging started in southern CA while hatching and hopper development continued in other parts of CA, Caucasus and the Russian Federation. Migratory Locust (LMI) hatching and hopper development continued in Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. In July, DMA lifecycle will come to an end everywhere, and CIT natural die off will start in CA. In Caucasus, the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan, CIT will start fledging and mating. LMI hopper development will continue in the northern and western regions of Kazakhstan and in the Russian Federation.

General Situation during April 2023 Forecast for May 2023 Moroccan Locust (DMA) hatching and hopper development was in progress in all Central Asian (CA) countries as well as in Azerbaijan and in Georgia. Critical situation in several north and north-east provinces of Afghanistan and south of Tajikistan was reported. General situation from November 2022 till end of January 2023 Forecast until mid of March 2023 Natural cycles of the three locust species – Moroccan Locust (DMA), Italian Locust (CIT) and Migratory Locust (LMI) – ended in late summer/early autumn in all countries with eggs laid in the soil, where they overwinter (embryonic diapause). During the forecast period, no hatching of all these three species are expected.

General Situation during August 2022 Forecast for September 2022 The situation was still classified as cautious for Moroccan (DMA), Italian (CIT) and Asian Migratory Locusts (LMI) in the Russian Federation and for CIT in Georgia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, since the risk of invading agricultural fields by adult locusts was still present. It was calm for other species and for other countries. Control operations in August covered an area of 44 373 hectares (ha) in Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA).
