General situation during May 2026
Moroccan locust (DMA) hopper development was almost completed in Central Asia (CA); mass fledging and mating started, as well as egg-laying in the southern areas. DMA hatching was observed, followed by hopper development, in Azerbaijan, Georgia and the Russian Federation. DMA situation in May was classified as a threat by all CA countries and as calm in Caucasus and the Russian Federation. Italian locust (CIT) hatching continued in Kazakhstan and started in other affected Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA) countries, followed by hopper development. The situation was classified as a threat in the Central Asian countries where it is present, and a calm in Caucasus and in the Russian Federation. Migratory locust (LMI) hatching started in Kazakhstan and in the Russian Federation.

General situation from November 2022 till end of January 2023 Forecast until mid of March 2023 Natural cycles of the three locust species – Moroccan Locust (DMA), Italian Locust (CIT) and Migratory Locust (LMI) – ended in late summer/early autumn in all countries with eggs laid in the soil, where they overwinter (embryonic diapause). During the forecast period, no hatching of all these three species are expected.

General Situation during August 2022 Forecast for September 2022 The situation was still classified as cautious for Moroccan (DMA), Italian (CIT) and Asian Migratory Locusts (LMI) in the Russian Federation and for CIT in Georgia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, since the risk of invading agricultural fields by adult locusts was still present. It was calm for other species and for other countries. Control operations in August covered an area of 44 373 hectares (ha) in Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA).

General Situation during September 2010, Forecast until mid-November 2010 The locust situation was calm in September in all CCA countries for the second consecutive month due to the completion of the life cycles of the three main locust pests. No control operations were carried out, except in Armenia in early September. In the countries where locust populations were still present DMA egg-laying ended in Azerbaijan, CIT populations were laying eggs in Armenia.
