HIGHLIGHTS
This study highlights the important role that tourism can play in valuing the natural and spiritual heritage of mountains, and the cultural diversity and traditional practices of mountain peoples. Furthermore, it highlights that mountain tourism can make a valuable contribution to promoting sustainable food systems and adding value to local products.
Between 2019 and 2020 the prevalence of hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean increased by 2 percentage points. This is partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is not the only reason, as the region's hunger figures have been growing for six consecutive years.
Africa is not on track to meet SDG 2. Recent estimates show that 281.6 million people on the continent – over one-fifth of the population – faced hunger in 2020, which is 46.3 million more than in 2019.
An estimated 375.8 million people in Asia and the Pacific faced hunger in 2020, which is nearly 54 million more people than in 2019. In 2020, more than 1.1 billion people did not have access to adequate food – an increase of almost 150 million people in just one year.
