Academia, Research Institutions and Universities
Partnerships with academia, research institutions and universities transform scientific knowledge into a powerful resource for eradicating hunger and malnutrition and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). FAO actively collaborates in this area to mobilize knowledge and innovation, build capacity, support evidence-based policy-making and share the Organization's field experience with the academic community.

FAO is partnering with academia, research institutions and universities to:
• assist partners to leverage their knowledge base and information resources for the benefit of local stakeholders;
• build capacity, stimulate innovative research, exchange and disseminate knowledge and experience;
• increase the degree of involvement of the academic community in dialogue on food security and sustainability;
• create awareness of key FAO initiatives to improve food security and nutrition, reduce rural poverty and achieve the SDGs;
• facilitate exchange and contacts between Russian researches and their peers in FAO Member States;
• provide opportunities to university graduates for internships and fellowships at FAO.

FAO Reference Centres in Russia
The FAO Reference Centres are institutions designated by the Director-General to provide specific and technical advice and services to FAO Member States on issues related to FAO’s mandate. Two research centres in Russia were granted such status.
In 2022, ARRIAH Centre of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) was granted the status of Reference Centre for Zoonotic Coronaviruses by FAO. The decision has been made on the basis of large-scale experience of ARRIAH research work with zoonotic coronaviruses, as well as taking into account the creation of a test-system for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in carnivorous animals and of the world’s first vaccine for its prevention.
ARRIAH also has a status of an FAO Reference Centre for Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).
In 2022, CRIE Institute of Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) was awarded the status of an FAO Reference Centre for antimicrobial resistance in agriculture and food industry (AMR). CRIE has thus become one of the FAO nine centres in the world for antimicrobial resistance.
