Day of Languages of the Peoples of the Russian Federation, established in November 2025 to protect, maintain and develop linguistic diversity of the country, is observed on 8 September. On the eve of the Day, the FAO Liaison Office with the Russian Federation interviewed Valentin Andreytsev (descendant of the ancient Udege Pionka clan), representative of the Udege People, an Indigenous People of the Far East. 

Adverse weather, Middle East Conflict, and Black Sea trade logistics mostly behind higher quotations for major food commodities. The benchmark index of world food commodity prices edged up in August, as high temperatures and other weather-related risks raised concerns over supply prospects, according to new data released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

On 2 September, the Future of AI Governance session took place as part of the Eastern Economic Forum 2026 and brought together representatives of international organizations, government bodies, academia, and the technological community. Participants discussed the concentration of technological power, unequal access to computational resources, and the need to move from general declarations on responsible AI to practical governance mechanisms.

In 2025, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin allocated about RUB 3 billion to the digitalization of industrial agriculture, including the creation of a unified digital platform and the launch of a situational data monitoring centre. However, according to Strategy Partners, as of March 2026, the level of digitalization was only 30%, primarily in large agricultural holdings.

FAO and the Russian Federation contribute to this effort by providing programmatic support, technical expertise and access to global knowledge. This has been possible thanks to a $1.5 million climate-smart agriculture initiative in the Fergana Valley – the two-year regional South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) project currently implemented by FAO with funding from the Russian Federation channeled through the UN Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC). 

For generations, traditional knowledge of Indigenous Peoples has been shaping unique ways of interacting with land, water, forests, and wildlife, helping communities conserve natural resources and adapt to environmental changes. Today, in the context of climate change, biodiversity loss, and food system transformation, this experience is becoming especially important. Maria Bukhaeva, Consultant at the FAO Moscow Office, took part in the International Forum of Indigenous Peoples held on 13–16 August 2026 in Krasnoyarsk.

From April to August 2026, Director of the FAO Moscow Office Oleg Kobiakov participated in dozens of industry conferences, forums and seminars held in the Russian Federation. Some of them are mentioned in the current report.

In the interview for the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, we discussed traditions, current challenges and heritage conservation with Olga Niuman, representative of the Veps – an Indigenous small-numbered Finno-Ugric People inhabiting primarily the northwest Russia. Also, Olga leads project activities of the Veps Community, a regional societal organization based in the Leningrad region.
