Shocks to the world’s increasingly interconnected food and agricultural markets are growing in frequency and intensity, and evidence suggests there are effective policy measures that can mitigate and shorten their impact, according to a new flagship report released today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

SOFI 2025 presents the latest data and analysis on hunger, food security and nutrition worldwide, including updated estimates on the cost and affordability of healthy diets. 

The 13th meeting of the Steering Committee of DLDD-NEAN (Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought — North East Asia Network), the intergovernmental network created to combat desertification, land degradation, droughts and associated sand and dust storms in North East Asia, and a forum featuring recognized experts took place at the UN House in Moscow.

On 24 June, the city of Saratov hosted the Volga Grain Export Forum that featured CEOs of leading companies and agricultural producers involved in Russian grain and grain products market, representatives of major trade associations of China, Iran, and India, Russian and foreign transport companies, experts from banking, insurance, and investment sectors of the agro-industrial complex.

FAO Liaison Office with the Russian Federation jointly with the Russian Civic Chamber Commission on Development of Agricultural Sector and Rural Areas organized an offsite meeting in the Republic of Dagestan on GIAHS programme promotion in Russia and agritourism development.

For educational purposes and to mobilize public opinion, FAO Liaison Office with the Russian Federation organized a press event in the venues of St. Petersburg Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2026. The presser was dedicated to the World Environment Day observed annually on 5 June. This year, the slogan of this special day in the international calendar was A Global Call for Climate Action.

At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Oleg Kobiakov, director of the Moscow FAO Liaison Office with the Russian Federation, addressed the session National Dietary Habits: Health as a Foundation of Sovereignty. Together with Oleg Kobiakov, the panelists included Russian healthcare officials: Minister of Health Dr Mikhail Murashko and Head of Rospotrebnadzor Dr Anna Popova. 

Eduard Porvatov, Consultant at the FAO Liaison Office with the Russian Federation, was engaged in the Russian segment of the Silk Road Caravan – Connecting Rangelands and Pastoralists on the Road from Riyadh to Ulaanbaatar international expedition that took place from 24 to 29 May in the territory of the Republic of Dagestan, the Republic of Kalmykia, and the Astrakhan region.

New early-season forecasts point to likely declining global cereal harvests and trade in the year ahead

On 28 May, the Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy convened a scientific conference on the occasion of International Day of Potato 2026. The theme of the forum was Where potatoes grow, livelihoods flourish. The event was prepared by FAO Liaison Office with the Russian Federation, Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Timiryazev Academy, and PhosAgro company.

On 26–29 May, the “Invasive species as a potential threat to the biological security of Russia: challenges and risks” scientific and practical conference on biological security, phytosanitary, emerging infections, and intersectoral interaction was held in Moscow and in Bykovo settlement in the Moscow region.

Representatives of FAO Moscow Office and UNEP, federal and regional authorities, academic institutions, universities, beekeeping associations, and apiculture practitioners took part in the round table on World Bee Day 2026. The Bashkir State Agrarian University (BashGAU) in Ufa hosted the event.

The Liaison Office with the Russian Federation of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) took part in the 80th International Scientific Conference of Young Scientists and Students organized by the Saint-Petersburg State University of Veterinary Medicine (SPbSUVM).

On 19–21 May 2026, Moscow hosted the traditional international exhibition Meat Industry.Chicken King.Refrigeration Industry for Agricultural Sector / MAP Russia 2026.

With the adoption of the joint report by consensus, the Thirty-fifth Session of the Regional Conference for Europe concluded in a positive spirit on 14 May. Hosted by Tajikistan in the capital, Dushanbe, the event was attended by over 230 participants, including representatives of more than 50 Members and of United Nations agencies, civil society, the private sector, research and academia, and rural youth.

Dushanbe - At the conclusion of his participation in the 35th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for Europe (ERC35),  QU Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) highlighted the importance of regional solidarity, innovation and investment in accelerating the transformation of agrifood systems across Europe and Central Asia amid growing climate, economic and geopolitical pressures.

On 16–17 April 2026, the Epidemiology 2026 Congress was held in Moscow, bringing together over 2000 participants from 79 Russian regions and 16 foreign countries. The “Antibiotic resistance in human and veterinary medicine: the role of genomic data in solving epidemiological problems” special session was an important part of the agenda.  The section was chaired by Alexey Tutelyan, RAS academician, and Oleg Kobiakov, Director of the FAO Liaison Office with the Russian Federation.
