Promoting the integration of Agricultural Awareness into primary education
Through a training programme, FAO, MGAP and the Faculty of Agronomy strengthened the capacities of primary school teachers to address Uruguay’s productive diversity, agrifood value chains, food and sustainability in the classroom, drawing on the country’s own context.
Call to action to strengthen rural women
As part of the International Year of the Woman Farmer, on 16 July 2026 Uruguay issued a call to action to strengthen the recognition and visibility of rural women and women in the agricultural sector, as well as public policies aimed at supporting them. During the event, representatives from various institutions exchanged perspectives and proposals to enhance the recognition of women farmers and advance joint action in the country.
Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis Workshop – Laguna Merín Project
Representatives from Brazil and Uruguay met in April in the city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, for a workshop focused on advancing the participatory development of a Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA). The objective is to lay the groundwork for future strategic actions to support sustainable water management in the Laguna Merín basin and coastal lagoons.
Launch of the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026 in Uruguay
Uruguay launched the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026 at an event organized by the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), with the participation of FAO.
Presentation of the International Year of the Woman Farmer to institutions of the Gender and Agriculture Plan
In March 2026, the FAO team in Uruguay participated in an expanded session of the Gender and Agriculture Commission and agricultural institutions, where the International Year of the Woman Farmer, its objectives and initiatives were presented. Participants from the Commission were invited to join the commemoration.
Visit of FAO Director-General QU Dongyu to Uruguay
In March 2026, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu paid an official visit to Uruguay, accompanied by an international delegation from the Organization. During his stay, he held meetings with national authorities and stakeholders linked to production, sustainability and food security.
World Fisheries Day 2025 in Uruguay
On 21 November 2025, World Fisheries Day was commemorated in Uruguay during an event organized by the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries to highlight national fisheries and the work of those who make them possible. The event was held within the framework of the development of the 2025–2040 Fisheries and Aquaculture Plan. During the event, the Ministry presented the work it will carry out with FAO’s technical support: a comprehensive assessment of Uruguay’s fisheries sector, which will generate updated information and technical inputs for the development of the Plan.
Commemoration in Uruguay of FAO’s 80th Anniversary and World Food Day
In November 2025, Uruguay commemorated FAO’s 80th anniversary and World Food Day at an event that brought together national authorities, strategic partners, the United Nations, FAO and the general public. The event highlighted the shared journey between Uruguay and FAO in food, agriculture and sustainable rural development, and concluded with the presentation of a Uruguayan Postal Service stamp in tribute to the anniversary.
Workshop “Towards the Sustainability of Food Systems in Uruguay”
In July 2025, together with the Food Systems Sustainable Transitions Research Institute of the University of the Republic, we held a workshop to exchange views on the sustainable transformation of our food system. Analyses and strategic perspectives were shared, aimed at building sustainable food systems. The activity concluded with an exchange that helped deepen the topics presented and enrich the technical dialogue among academia, public institutions, civil society and FAO.
Dialogue “Cooperatives and the Transformation of the Agrifood System in Uruguay”
As part of the celebration of the International Day of Cooperatives, organized by the National Institute of Cooperativism (INACOOP), FAO in Uruguay held a dialogue to exchange perspectives on cooperativism and its role in the sustainable transformation of the agrifood system.
