26 January 2015, New York: Agriculture and food security must be treated as essential components of peacebuilding and conflict resolution, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said during a special meeting of the UN Peacebuilding Commission held here today.

Some $10.6 million is needed to complete the joint 2013-16 FAO/government anti-locust programme in Madagascar, including monitoring and spraying operations going through the end of the rainy season in May 2015. Failure to carry through the programme would annul the more than $28.8 million mobilized so far and could trigger a food-security crisis in a huge part of the country.

FAO's monthly food price index declined 1.7 percent in December to 188.6 points, led down by sugar and palm oil. The Food Price Index averaged 202 points for all of 2014, down 3.7 percent from 2013, marking the third consecutive annual decline.
