Graziano da Silva noted how Japan has a healthy and "unique" food culture, one that includes many vegetables, fruits and fish. He cited Washoku, a comprehensive set of skills, knowledge and traditions relating to the preparation and consumption of food, which has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

FAO and the World Bank are strengthening their cooperation to end hunger and poverty at global and national levels. The two organizations will work closely together to support the member countries in meeting the SDGs, improve rural livelihoods, enhance efficiency of food production, and ensure sustainable management of natural resources worldwide.

African Eggplant is one of the vegetables grown by farmers displaced by Boko Haram violence in northern Nigeria who are participating in an FAO project to kick-start local food production. This traditional vegetable is known as gorongo and it is an important social ingredient as well as a nutritious one.

The leaders of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have called on the international community to urgently step up action to prevent further hunger deaths in four countries stalked by famine: north-eastern Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen.

As part of efforts to move towards “climate-smart” agriculture, countries have shared new experiences on how to produce food in ways that help farmers cope with the impacts of climate change and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture. The exchange took place at a special side-event during a session of FAO’s executive Council.
