Seed market growth
Up to 50 percent of crop yield increases come from improved seeds and farmer's access to quality seeds is a key factor for better food and nutrition in poor countries. However, medium and large seed companies tend to concentrate on the production and marketing of hybrid seed, for high value crops grown by larger farmers and market them in more fertile and wealthier areas. Improved, non-hybrid seeds for poor farmers in local food security crops such as cassava, sorghum and millet are however essential in the fight against hunger.
