The protection of plant and animal genetic resources is essential for global food security. In the developing world, seeds and the genetic resources they harbour still possess a powerful symbolism - a sacred link to our past, a legacy we must preserve. An old African proverb perhaps says it best: The land was not left to us by our parents, it was loaned to us by our children.
