Rinderpest, a highly contagious and lethal virus, is a major threat to the many millions of cattle and buffalo in developing countries. FAO's Global Rinderpest Eradication Programme is working to eliminate the last remaining pockets of the disease through awareness-raising and vaccination campaigns, working together with national and local farmers and veterinarians to protect the livelihood of many rural communities.
