FAO Global Action on One Country One Priority Product

The Global Action (GA) on Green Development of Special Agro-Products (SAPs), themed as “One Country – One Priority Product” (OCOP), is a five-year plan (2021-2025) developed to support Members in the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agri-food systems.

The SAPs are recognized as unique in terms of national or cultural heritage, flavor or nutritional content, unique methods of producing or processing and attractive to domestic and international market demands. Vanilla, saffron, sea cucumbers or  mangoes are examples.

Developing SAPs can improve food security and rural livelihoods, strengthen value chain actors and expand consumer choices. The integration of ‘green’ innovations and technologies can bring about resilience and sustainability and help achieve the SDGs. Challenges such as natural resource constraints, environmental pollution, ecological degradation, and climate change will be addressed with context-specific interventions.

Supporting One Village One Priority Product in the Asia Pacific region: FAO Global Action on One Country One Product

Background and rationale of the Global Action plan

Globally, food systems are under pressure, where environmental degradation, low resilience to climate and economic shocks and inclusion of poor and vulnerable groups remain a challenge. Previous efforts at reducing hunger and malnutrition and poverty have negatively affected natural ecosystems and this is exacerbated by the recent socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The "One Country - One Priority Product (OCOP)" programme will support the transformation of food systems through green development of food value chains of Special Agro-Products (SAPs) that are inclusive, profitable, and environmentally sustainable.
