Social statistics - Data

Through its work on social statistics, FAO generates harmonized datasets and disseminate indicators that relate to rural livelihoods and agriculture, in support of policy formulation.

In particular, FAO’s social statistics data production activities focus on:

  • Generating harmonized datasets and indicators from household-based and farm-based surveys within the RuLIS initiative, focusing on key topics such as income, poverty, employment and social protection, with a special focus on rural areas;
  • Updating FAOSTAT domains of employment statistics in rural areas and agriculture and population statistics;
  • Compiling data and indicators on decent employment statistics in rural areas and agriculture, social protection and migration;
  • Producing and disseminating sex-disaggregated data and indicators;
  • Collecting and disseminating data related to damage and loss in agriculture as a result of disasters;
  • Monitor data on SDGs 2.3.1, 2.3.2 (small scale food producer’s productivity and income) and 5.a.1 (Women’s ownership of agricultural land) for international reporting.
  • Monitor indicator C-2 (Direct agricultural loss attributed to disasters) of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the corresponding SDG Indicator 1.5.2 (Direct economic loss attributed to disasters in relation to global gross domestic product).
