The Committee on Forestry (COFO) is the highest global intergovernmental body on forestry, serving as a central platform for technical guidance and policy dialogue within the United Nations system. COFO brings together 128 Members shaping international forestry policies, providing technical guidance and advancing forest-based solutions for sustainable development.
COFO was established by the Conference at its Sixteenth Session in 1971 (Resolution 10/71) as a Committee of the Council. Its Rules of Procedure were adopted at the Second Session (1974) and amended at the Third (1976) and Twentieth (2010) Sessions (See Basic Texts, Vol. I - Section J, Rules of Procedure of the Committee on Forestry). The first COFO Session was held in May 1972, under the chairpersonship of Norway, with the participation of 55 Members.
