Accelerating the FAO Green Cities Initiative through action on the ground

Tuesday 29 September 2026 | 16.30–17.00 CEST | Atrium

10th World Forest Week

The event will showcase how the FAO Green Cities Initiative (GCI) is being translated into action on the ground through a practical, experience-based dialogue with representatives from cities, national institutions and partners engaged at different levels in the implementation of the Initiative.

The discussion will move from city priorities to integrated solutions that highlight how urban and peri-urban forestry, green spaces, sustainable food systems and other green infrastructure are being incorporated into urban development strategies.

Concrete results, lessons learned and key success factors, including the conditions needed for scaling-up actions, will demonstrate how coordinated action can accelerate green city infrastructure.

Objectives

  • Share experiences from cities and countries implementing GCI-supported actions.
  • Identify key success factors in translating the GCI framework into tangible results.
  • Discuss how FAO, Member Countries and partners can strengthen support for cities in scaling up integrated green urban solutions, including urban and peri-urban forestry.
  • Strengthen collaboration, peer learning and visibility across the FAO Green Cities Network.
