Building Global Capacity on Halting Deforestation and Conversions from Agricultural Commodities (BIG-CHANCE)

BiG-CHANCE (Building Global Capacity on Halting Deforestation and Conversions from Agricultural Commodities ) is a global initiative led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), funded by  the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF).

This project aims to tackle global deforestation by leveraging the transformative role that agricultural supply chains can play as a solution, by building global capacities and strengthening policy coherence between agriculture and forests to promote forest-positive agriculture. BiG-CHANCE will support governments with tools and knowledge to enhance effective policies and actions to decouple agricultural supply chain from deforestation, thereby contributing to achieve climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development goals.

Policy frameworks and analytical tools

The project will use an innovative and integrated approach in developing analytical frameworks for evaluating and guiding policy measures for halting deforestation.

Forestry Public Expenditure Review for policy coherence: Supporting countries to optimize public investment opportunities and minimize trade-offs for sustainable land use and halting deforestation. The project is developing an analytical framework to assess policy coherence through public expenditure analysis of forests and agricultural spending, supporting sustainable land use and agrifood systems transformation.

The Solutions-tree: Solutions to halting deforestation – through sustainable agrifood systems transformation

The project will develop “Solutions-tree,” an evidence-based analytical framework and online platform to support governments reduce deforestation and promoting agricultural supply chains that have a positive impact on forests. It serves as a gateway to solutions, case studies, and tools linking solutions to indirect drivers of deforestation, supporting strategy development and project design.

Knowledge sharing and regional exchange

Regional exchange workshops will facilitate knowledge exchange, enabling countries to share insights and successful strategies, and strengthen collaborative platforms to support collective action in the region. The project will also promote global knowledge exchange and south-south cooperation through collaboration and partnerships with other FAO-led initiatives, such as the UN-REDD African Forest Forum (AFF) Initiative.
