The rehabilitated Mariama Airstrip provides a crucial connection for 10 remote Sepik communities, enhancing access to vital services and market opportunities previously hampered by geographical isolation. Delivered through a partnership involving RAA, ILO, and EU funding via the EU-STREIT PNG Programme, the project also provided local employment and strengthens regional transport resilience as part of the EU's Global Gateway initiative.

The EU-STREIT PNG Programme delivered 50 engine-powered boats and 200 durable canoes with essential accessories to 91 fisher groups in Papua New Guinea’s greater Sepik region. This initiative, reaching 13,000+ fisher folks, aims to sustainably enhance fish catch, improve income opportunities, and contribute to food and nutrition security for costal, island, and riverine communities.
