Mesoamerica Hunger Free

Mesoamerica Hunger Free program in five key messages

Triangular South-South Cooperation consists of the dissemination and exchange of key development solutions (knowledge, experiences, good practices, policies, technologies, and resources) among countries of the Global South, and involves partnership with a third partner.

The Mesoamerica Hunger Free program is a triangular South-South Cooperation initiative that arises from a collaboration agreement between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of Mexico, through the Mexican Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AMEXCID).

Nine Mesoamerican countries currently participate in this program: Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and the Dominican Republic.

Mesoamerica Hunger Free focuses its efforts on supporting the generation and strengthening of enabling frameworks (public policies, regulatory instruments, and frameworks and mechanisms for governance, management, and coordination) that allow public actors to carry out their work adequately and with full capacity to:

  • Promote healthy diets for the entire population, including the most vulnerable;
  • Facilitate equitable access for the most vulnerable rural population to the resources needed to generate sustainable livelihoods; and
  • Implement inclusive institutional mechanisms that allow indigenous and Afro-descendant populations, rural women, and youth to access opportunities under equal conditions.

The program contributes to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially to SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).
