Mesoamerica Hunger Free extended its intervention to Mexico in 2023, initially prioritizing the country’s southern-southeastern region, where the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Quintana Roo are located. These Mexican states share many characteristics with the rest of Mesoamerican countries, enabling a broad and fruitful exchange of experiences and knowledge.
The program has contributed to the recognition and strengthening of family farming as a cornerstone of food security and nutrition, with particular attention to the design of policy instruments that promote the development of this sector. In addition, Mesoamerica Hunger Free has contributed to strengthening institutional capacities, generating knowledge, and promoting more sustainable productive practices, with an emphasis on the participation of rural women and Indigenous peoples.
These are some of the results achieved with the program’s support:
- Conceptualization and characterization of family farming in Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Quintana Roo.
- Systematization of the experience of the Sembrando Vida program in the municipality of José María Morelos, Quintana Roo.
- Support for the design of a registration system for family farmers in Quintana Roo.
- Implementation of a pilot project for the establishment of community gardens in Quintana Roo.
- Formulation of a proposal for a Law for the Promotion of Family Farming in Quintana Roo.
- Formulation of a Family Farming and Conservation Development Plan in Chiapas.
- Formulation of a Small-scale and Family Farming Development Plan in Oaxaca.
- Formulation of a Policy Plan for the Development of Family Farming in Quintana Roo.
- Formulation of a Strategy for the productive recovery of degraded soils and conservation of water resources in Chiapas.
- Formulation of a comprehensive strategy on bio-inputs and appropriate technologies for the sustainable use of water in Oaxaca.
- Establishment of state chapters of the Parliamentary Front Against Hunger in Colima, Oaxaca, and Quintana Roo.
